Ambitious Flevoland hosts National Hydrogen Day
23 June 2022Flevoland is already the Dutch national champion in the production of green electricity with solar and wind. The region has a range of initiatives, centred around the production and supply of green hydrogen, which the Circul8 company bundles in Hysolar Innovatie & Advies. Green hydrogen in decentralised energy systems was also the core theme of the National Hydrogen Day in Lelystad on 17 June.
REF, Renewable Energy-hub Flevoland
REF stands for a cluster of local actors who work together in green electricity generation, battery storage, the conversion of energy to hydrogen and the application of green hydrogen. Circul8 plays the central role here for the production and supply of the green hydrogen. Circul8’s goal is to launch actual production in 2023. “We believe in hydrogen as the way ahead, for example to address network congestion issues. Overloading the power grid is otherwise a major barrier in terms of producing more green electricity,” explains Luke Bouwman, the director of Circul8.
Flevoland, ‘the new green energy heart of the Netherlands’
Hydrogen has numerous applications, from zero-emission mobility to the production of fertiliser, steel and electricity. Hydrogen-electric aircraft are already being developed for shorter distances. With green hydrogen, for example, you can also produce synthetic fuels for the larger vessels and planes. J. Fackeldey, a member of the provincial executive, was already presenting his vision of the future by talking about ‘Flevoland as the new green energy heart of the Netherlands’.
High-profile local purchasers of green hydrogen
The region has a host of potential clients who have already expressed interest. Examples include Lelystad Airport, Flevokust Port, road haulage companies and, of course, the agricultural sector, with more than 10,000 tractors in the region. And here too, the new green hydrogen sector will itself attract new activities.
